ITS launches its prospectus for year 2020-2021 and two new pioneer programmes

During a virtual conference, the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) together with the Ministry for Tourism and Consumer Protection launched the ITS prospectus for the academic year 2020-2021. Applications for all the programmes are now available online.

During the conference, Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection, Julia Farrugia Portelli, announced that the prospectus includes two new academic programmes, which are the first of their kind worldwide. These are the Diploma in Climate Friendly Travel and the Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management. Malta is again at the forefront in promoting two very important sectors; diving which is a very important tourism niche in our islands and the challenge of climate change in tourism and how can tourism be more climate friendly. Lectures for these two programmes will be available online, from the ITS campus in Gozo, with the Bachelor of Science including also practical diving research/sessions around Gozo considering it is one of the favourite spots for divers around the world. The Minister added that ITS has once again proven its important role in educating and preparing the best trained personnel for Malta and Gozo’s tourism industry which shall very soon again be expected to deliver a high quality experience for tourists all year round.

The Diploma in Climate Friendly Travel, pegged at level 4, is offered in collaboration with SUNx and is the only ITS diploma which is not limited to ITS students only. This study programme, will train students to support companies within the travel and transport industry in making the necessary changes to become carbon neutral, in view of the current global challenge of climate change.

SUNx Co-Founder, Professor Geoffrey Lipman, live from Belgium, added that SUNx Malta is delighted to collaborate with ITS to deliver the world's first Climate Friendly Travel Diploma, to help create clean, green jobs to respond to the existing climate crisis and make a better future for our kids. Lipman added that they applaud the 2050 Climate Neutral vision of Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli in making this happen.

The Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management, in collaboration with DAN Europe, is pegged at level 6 and offered through the International School of Diving Safety and Medicine, a school launched in 2017 and formed specifically by DAN Europe and ITS, in collaboration with the Professional Diving Schools Association (PDSA). Diving in Malta is sought after by 5% of tourists and year after year, Malta is voted as one of the top diving destinations worldwide by international divers.

Through a live communication from Italy, DAN Europe President and CEO, Professor Alessandro Marroni, said that diving implies extraordinary environment exposure requiring specialized techniques and safety culture. The goal of the world’s first ITS Diving Safety Management course is to train professionals for the best development and sustainability of the Diving Industry in Malta and Internationally.

Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, through a video message, stated that these programmes are a positive initiative, and even more positive that they will be held at the ITS campus in Gozo. Camilleri said he looks forward in seeing individuals applying for such courses so that they are equipped with the necessary education for what will be required in the upcoming future.

Apart from these two new programmes, the ITS prospectus includes 23 modular courses within 13 programmes of study which are divided in various levels starting from the Foundation programme at Level 2, up to a Master’s Degree at Level 7 of the Malta Qualification Framework. Available courses include Travel and Tourism, Rooms Division, Food and Beverage Service, Food Preparation, Events, Tour Guiding, Culinary Arts, International Hospitality Management and Heritage Interpretation.

ITS Chairman Carlo Micallef and ITS CEO Pierre Fenech stated that it is of a great satisfaction seeing another two programmes launched in collaboration with highly respected International Institutions. This is in line with the ITS strategy of internationalisation and the pursuit of excellence.

Micallef said that never like today do we realise the importance of tourism for the Maltese economy and ITS has the important role to educate and prepare the best trained personnel for Malta and Gozo’s tourism industry.

The ITS prospectus may be found on the ITS website www.its.edu.mt, together with all the relevant information required. Online applications for all the programmes are also available on the same website.

Waqt konferenza virtwali, l-Istitut għall-Istudji tat-Turiżmu (ITS) flimkien mal-Ministeru għat-Turiżmu u l-Protezzjoni tal-Konsumatur nedew il-prospett tal-ITS għas-sena akkademika 2020-2021. L-applikazzjonijiet għall-programmi kollha issa huma wkoll miftuħa online.

Waqt il-konferenza, il-Ministru għat-Turiżmu u l-Protezzjoni tal-Konsumatur, Julia Farrugia Portelli, ħabbret li l-prospett jinkludi żewġ programmi akkademiċi ġodda, li huma l-ewwel tat-tip tagħhom madwar id-dinja. Dawn huma d-Diploma fl-Ivvjaġġar Favur il-Klima u l-Baċellerat tax-Xjenza fl-Immaniġġjar tas-Sigurtà tal-Għadis. Malta tinsab mill-ġdid fuq quddiem fil-promozzjoni ta’ żewġ oqsma importanti ħafna; l-għadis, li huwa niċċa turistika importanti ħafna fil-gżejjer tagħna, u l-isfida tat-tibdil tal-klima u kif it-turiżmu jista’ jkun ta’ inqas dannu għall-klima. Il-lezzjonijiet għal dawn iż-żewġ programmi se jsiru mill-internet, mill-kampus tal-ITS f’Għawdex, bil-kors tal-għadis jinkludi wkoll  numru ta' sezzjonijiet prattiċi li se jsiru fil-baħar madwar Għawdex li hu meqjus bħala wieħed mill-aqwa destinazzjonijiet għall-għaddasa fid-dinja. Il-Ministru qalet ukoll li l-ITS, għal darb’oħra, wera li għandu rwol importanti fl-edukazzjoni u t-tħejjija tal-aħjar impjegati mħarrġa għall-industrija tat-turiżmu f’Malta u Għawdex, li dalwaqt tkun mistennija tagħti esperjenza ta’ kwalità għolja lit-turisti li jżuruna matul is-sena kollha.

Id-Diploma fl-Ivvjaġġar Favur il-Klima, hija ta’ Livell 4 u offruta b’kollaborazzjoni ma’ SUNx. Hija l-unika diploma li anki jekk wieħed mhuwiex student tal-ITS jista’ japplika għaliha. Dan il-programm ta’ studju se jħarreġ lill-istudenti kif jappoġġjaw kumpaniji fl-industrija tal-ivvjaġġar u t-trasport biex jagħmlu l-bidliet meħtieġa ħalli jsiru newtrali għall-karbonju, fid-dawl tal-isfida globali attwali tal-bidla fil-klima.

Il-Kofundatur ta’ SUNx, il-Professur Geoffrey Lipman, li ngħaqad fil-konferenza mill-Belġju, qal li SUNx Malta kuntenta li qed tikkollabora mal-ITS biex toffri l-ewwel Diploma fl-Ivvjaġġar Favur il-Klima fid-dinja, bil-ħsieb li toħloq impjiegi nodfa u ekoloġiċi li jnaqqsu l-kriżi tal-klima u joffru ġejjieni aħjar għat-tfal tagħna. Lipman faħħar ukoll il-viżjoni newtrali tal-Klima 2050 tal-Ministru Julia Farrugia Portelli.

Il-Baċellerat tax-Xjenza fl-Immaniġġjar tas-Sigurtà tal-Għadis, b’kollaborazzjoni ma’ DAN Europe, huwa ta’ Livell 6 u offrut permezz tal-Iskola Internazzjonali tas-Sigurtà fl-Għadis u l-Mediċina, skola li fetħet fl-2017 u li hi mħarrġa speċifikament minn DAN Europe u l-ITS, id f’id mal-Assoċjazzjoni tal-Iskejjel Professjonali tal-Għaddasa (PDSA). L-għadis f’Malta mfittex minn 5% tat-turisti u, sena wara sena, Malta tkun ivvutata minn għaddasa internazzjonali bħala waħda mill-aqwa destinazzjonijiet għall-għadis madwar id-dinja.

B’komunikazzjoni diretta mill-Italja, il-President u l-Kap Eżekuttiv ta’ DAN Europe, il-Professur Alessandro Marroni, qal li l-għads jimplika espożizzjoni ambjentali straordinarja li teħtieġ teknika apposta u sigurtà speċjalizzata. L-għan ta’ dan il-kors huwa li jħarreġ professjonisti għal aktar żvilupp u sostenibbiltà fl-industrija tal-għadis f’Malta u globalment.

Il-Ministru għal Għawdex Clint Camilleri, permezz ta’ messaġġ awdjoviżiv, qal li t-tnedija ta’ dawn il-programmi hi inizjattiva pożittiva, l-aktar għax se jsiru fil-kampus tal-ITS f’Għawdex. Camilleri qal li hu ħerqan biex jara n-nies japplikaw għal dawn il-korsijiet ħalli jkunu mgħammra għal dak li se jkun meħtieġ fil-futur qrib.

Minbarra dawn iż-żewġ programmi ġodda, il-prospectus tal-ITS jinkludi wkoll 23 kors modulari fi 13-il programm ta’ studju li huma maqsuma f’diversi livelli. Dawn jibdew mill-programm bażiku (Foundation) ta’ Livell 2 u jibqgħu tilgħin sal-grad ta’ Masters ta’ Livell 7 fil-Qafas tal-Kwalifiki ta’ Malta. Il-korsijiet jinkludu l-oqsma tal-ivvjaġġar u t-turiżmu, id-diviżjoni tal-kmamar, is-servizzi tal-ikel u x-xorb, il-preparazzjoni tal-ikel, l-avvenimenti, il-gwidi tat-turisti, l-arti kulinari, l-immaniġġjar internazzjonali tal-ospitalità, u l-interpretazzjoni tal-patrimonju.

Ic-Chairman tal-ITS, Carlo Micallef, u l-Kap Eżekuttiv, Pierre Fenech, qalu li huwa ta’ sodisfazzjon kbir għalihom li l-ITS qed iniedi żewġ programmi oħra b’kollaborazzjoni ma’ istituzzjonijiet internazzjonali rispettati ħafna. Dan hu konformi mal-istrateġija globali u ta’ eċċellenza tal-ITS.

Is-Sur Micallef qal li, iktar minn qatt qabel, qegħdin nagħrfu l-importanza tat-turiżmu għall-ekonomija Maltija u li l-ITS għandu rwol importanti li jeduka u jħejji impjegati mħarrġin għall-industrija tat-turiżmu f’Malta u Għawdex.

Il-prospett jinsab fis-sit tal-ITS www.its.edu.mt mal-informazzjoni rilevanti kollha.
